Sailing Olympics:  New Zealand’s Jo Aleh and Molly Meech’s surprise qualification adds excitement to the Olympics

MARSEILLE, Aug 1 (Reuters) – In a dramatic turn of events, New Zealand sailors Jo Aleh and Molly Meech have unexpectedly qualified for the women’s skiff medal race at the Olympics. What they thought was their final sail turned into an exhilarating continuation of their journey.

A Surprising Twist

Jo Aleh, 38, and Molly Meech, 31, were ready to celebrate the end of their Olympic campaign in the 49er FX class. As they came ashore, they received unexpected news from an official that left them astonished.

“We were coming in thinking it was our last sail in the FX, so when we got ashore and someone came to us and said we’re going to take your boat to quarantine, we were like, ‘oh … we made the medal race,’” Meech recounted.

Historic First for Women’s Sailing

Thursday’s medal race marks a historic moment, as it will be the first women’s skiff medal race in Olympic history. Following the women’s event, the men’s skiff medal race will feature New Zealand’s “McKiwis” duo, Isaac McHardie and William McKenzie, who are strong contenders for a medal.

No Podium, But Full Commitment

Despite their qualification, Aleh and Meech are aware that their previous scores in the series make it impossible for them to reach the podium. However, they are determined to give their best in the 10-boat showcase race.

“We’re pretty stoked,” said Meech, who, along with her helm Aleh, has a remarkable history in Olympic sailing. Meech won silver in the skiff at Rio in 2016, while Aleh won gold and silver in the women’s dinghy at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, respectively.

Reflections and Determination

Aleh reflected on their performance, highlighting the progress they made throughout the event. “Compared with how we sailed at the start to where we now stand, it has been a pretty good Games,” she said.

The duo’s initial celebration of their last sail has turned into anticipation for one more race. “It’s going to be fun, one more race,” Aleh said with a smile.
