“Inside Out 2” grabs top spot at Korean box office for fifth consecutive weekend

Korea Box Office – Inside Out 2: Pixar animation film “Inside Out 2” held the top spot at the South Korean cinema box office for a fifth consecutive weekend, successfully overtaking another local challenger, disaster-action film “Project Silence.”

According to data from Cobis, a tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic), “Inside Out 2” scored $3.53 million with a 30% market share between Friday and Sunday. The film’s total gross since its release on June 12 has reached $53.3 million. This total is the third-highest gross by any film released in Korea this year and the highest for any imported title.

Directed and co-written by Kim Tae-gon, “Project Silence” takes a road bridge near Incheon Airport as the setting for a chain reaction of crashes, explosions and mayhem. It also features an attack by genetically engineered dogs trained to target people based on their voices.

“Project Silence” earned $2.49 million from 356,000 viewers over the weekend and captured 21% of the weekend market.

“Escape,” released a week earlier, slipped to third place. It earned $2.43 million in the latest weekend and has grossed a total of $9.19 million in 12 days of release.

Other films and their grosses:

“Handsome Guys”: Earned $1.48 million in fourth place. It is the Korean remake of “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil” and has earned $8.91 million in 19 days.

“Hijack 1971”: Earned $707,000 in its fourth weekend. Its total since its June 21 debut has risen to $11.3 million.

“Doraemon: Nobita’s Earth Symphony”: The weekend’s second-biggest new release, earning $218,000 in its five-day opening run and $270,000 in sixth place overall.

“Fly Me to the Moon”: The American comedy starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum ranked seventh. With a three-day debut and some previews, the film grossed $145,000 over the weekend.

“A Quiet Place: Day One”: Earned a lower $103,000 in its third weekend. This brings its total to $3.84 million.

“Uma Musume: Pretty Derby – Beginning of a New Era”: Earned $79,500 between Friday and Sunday. In its four-day opening run, it grossed $138,000.

“Love Lies Bleeding”: Ranked tenth at the Korean box office. It made $50,900 over the weekend and $94,000 in its five-day opening run.
Overall, the nationwide weekend box office dropped 20% to $11.7 million.
