Weather update: Rains return, heat and humidity reduce; IMD issues yellow alert

Mumbai: After a long dry spell, Mumbai heaved a sigh of relief on Tuesday morning as rains returned to the city, bringing respite to those suffering from the heat and humidity. The city received light to moderate rainfall, while some areas in the eastern and western suburbs recorded heavy rains.

For the next 24 hours, the city and suburbs are likely to have generally cloudy sky with moderate rain and thundershowers. The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 30°C, while the minimum temperature is expected to hover around 26°C.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain and thundershowers for the next 24 hours. The city and suburbs are likely to have partly cloudy sky with light to moderate rain and thundershowers. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar districts of Maharashtra, predicting light to moderate rain in parts of the state.

The city and its suburbs have not received substantial rainfall since the beginning of August, with only occasional light showers. However, areas such as Bandra-Kurla Complex, Marol, Andheri, Vile Parle and Borivali have received rainfall since Tuesday morning.

The weather department has forecast rains across the state in the coming days, with heavy rains expected over Konkan and central Maharashtra. The low pressure system formed over South Bangladesh and adjoining areas is expected to move northwest. Besides, a low pressure area extending up to Tamil Nadu and the Comorin area is also active.

Temperatures have dropped, bringing relief to people reeling under heat and humidity for the past two weeks. The IMD’s latest weather update forecasts thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate rainfall and strong winds (30-40 kmph) at some places.

There have been complaints of slow traffic movement due to potholes on city roads, which have worsened due to the recent rains. There is no report of large-scale waterlogging anywhere in the city. The return of rains has brought much relief to the people who have been battling heat and humidity for the last two weeks.
